Designit's Mikal Hallstrup talks to design commentator Niti Bhan on the World Design Capital 2008 website this month.
Bhan's article asks how designers can deliver solutions that can address the needs of people and the planet - not simply the profits that are crucial to every business.
One answer, says Mikal, is focusing on sustainable solutions rather than the next big thing.
And as an example, he highlights a railway initiative in Copenhagen that encourages commuters to dispose of their newspapers in recycle bins at the station. It didn't just make the trains look nicer, it also increased recycling by 80% and added value to the railway's brand.
