Smartmatic

Smartmatic offers governments around the world a portfolio of solutions to modernise elections and promote citizen participation. From strategy and product development to interface design, we worked with Smartmatic to create an efficient and auditable voting machine.

Two individuals with obscured faces are seated at a table inside a room labeled as a polling station. The table is equipped with various items including papers, cups, a black bag, and electronic devices. One individual appears to be assisting the other with an electronic device, possibly for voting purposes.
A person is using a self-service kiosk with a touchscreen display. The screen shows graphical instructions for scanning a barcode. The person is holding an item with a barcode facing the scanner, which is part of the kiosk. The background features a blurred indoor setting with greenery, suggesting the location might be a public space like a mall or store.
Three icons, each paired with a word. The first icon on the left is a circle with a dashed outline, representing ‘Transparency.’ The middle icon is a cross or plus sign, symbolizing ‘Integrity.’ The third icon on the right is a pie chart with one quarter filled in, indicating ‘Efficiency.

With elections attracting unprecedented attention – and voter participation decreasing – Smartmatic is laser-focused on bringing the advantages of legitimate and transparent electronic voting to citizens and governments around the world. Constantly evolving its election portfolio, Smartmatic partnered with Designit to define a new generation of election products and solutions with a consistent user experience strategy and design language.

A person’s hand is touching a screen on an electronic voting machine labeled ‘SMARTMATIC.’ The screen displays options for a United States Senator vote, with names of candidates and corresponding selection buttons. The hand is pressing the button next to the name ‘Cory Booker.’ Other visible options include ‘Rik Mehta,’ ‘Veronica Fernandez,’ and ‘Madelyn R. Hoffman.’ There are also buttons for a write-in candidate, language selection, and accessibility options at the bottom of the screen. The background shows a blurred view of what appears to be an indoor voting location.

Together, we designed a more inclusive and adaptable system to facilitate voting and increase voter participation, while maintaining a rigorous level of security. We created a new voting machine along with a roadmap for future product expansions, and equipped the management systems with interfaces that can be adapted to local voting laws and regulations. Our collaboration will enable governments to efficiently manage elections while also maintaining transparency throughout the process.

A person with their face obscured is standing in front of an electronic voting machine. The individual is wearing a patterned headscarf with shades of blue, purple, and grey, and a dark outfit. In the person’s hands is a paper ballot or receipt that they appear to be inserting into the voting machine. The background features a world map on the wall and a ‘Go Vote’ sign, indicating the setting is likely a polling station during an election.

‘Working with a globally present team like Designit, that really cared about understanding our needs and goals, was the best option to support us in designing an inclusive, secure, and intuitive voting system.’

An expansive warehouse filled with numerous brown cardboard boxes, some stacked on pallets. In the foreground, there are several open boxes on tables, suggesting a packing or unpacking process. The background shows rows of shelving units stocked with more boxes, indicating a busy distribution center or storage facility.

More than 5,000 of the new A4-500 voting machines were delivered for the 2018 Belgium elections. This is just one of the products we are helping Smartmatic develop within their latest election solutions portfolio.
